Which Port Does It Leave From?

This is the thing worth settling first, because the listings blur it and it changes your whole day.

Chania has four separate places boats leave from, and only one of them is in the city:

• The Venetian harbour, in the Old Town. Short sightseeing trips, glass-bottom boats, sunset cruises. Walkable from anywhere central.
• Nea Chora, ten minutes west along the seafront. Small-boat rental and a few local departures.
• Souda, 7km east. The deep-water port — sailing charters and the Athens ferry.
• Kissamos (Kastelli), 42km west. Balos, Gramvousa, and the Kythira line. Not walkable from anything; see our Kissamos port guide.

So when a listing says "boat trip from Chania" for a full-day excursion, what it usually means is a coach from Chania to a different port. That is fine — it is often the sensible way to do it — but budget the transfer time and know you are not stepping onto a boat at the end of your street.

From the Venetian Harbour

The genuinely local option, and underrated. Boats leave from the quay below the Old Town for one-hour sightseeing runs out past the lighthouse and along the coast, many of them glass-bottomed. It is cheap, it needs no planning, and it is the single easiest thing to do with children on a hot afternoon.

What it gets you that the land doesn't: the view back at the Venetian harbour and the lighthouse from the water, which is the angle every photograph of Chania is taken from and one you cannot reach on foot.

Sunset cruises are the same idea stretched to two or three hours, usually with a swim stop and often with food and drink. Prices move a lot depending on whether it is a big boat with a bar or a small group on a catamaran — check which you are booking, because the experience is not remotely the same.

Balos & Gramvousa

The big one, and the trip most people mean when they search for a boat from Chania. It sails from Kissamos, calls at Imeri Gramvousa with its Venetian fortress, then spends the afternoon at the Balos lagoon. Full day, roughly €30–40 for the cruise, plus a coach transfer if you are not driving to the port yourself.

Sailing Day Trips

A different proposition from the big cruise boats: twenty people rather than three hundred, actual sails, and a route that bends to the day's wind rather than a timetable. Most leave from Kolymbari on the way west or from Souda, and run five to eight hours with swim stops.

The Akrotiri Coast

The peninsula east of the city has the most dramatic coastline near Chania and much of it is easier to reach by sea than by road.

Seitan Limania is the obvious example — from land it is a steep scramble down a cliff path, and a fair number of people turn back. From the water you simply arrive. Our Seitan Limania guide covers the walk if you would rather do it on foot.

Marathi, a small sheltered bay on the peninsula, is where a lot of the smaller boats and rentals are based. Stavros, at the top, is the bay from the end of Zorba the Greek.

One thing worth knowing: Agioi Theodoroi — the island off Agia Marina, locally Thodorou — is a protected reserve for the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat, and landing is prohibited. Boats circle it and point out the cave that gives it its open-mouthed profile. Anyone offering to put you ashore should not be.

Renting Your Own Boat

Underused, and the best value on this page for a group of four. Small outboard boats rent from Nea Chora, Marathi and Almyrida for roughly €150 and up per boat for a half day, fuel usually extra.

No licence is needed for these — they are deliberately kept below the engine size Greek rules require one for. You get a safety briefing, a chart, and a clearly defined area you are asked to stay inside. It is not sailing; it is a small motorboat that lets you reach a cove and stop there for as long as you want.

The catch is wind. These boats are small and the north coast picks up chop by mid-afternoon in summer, so morning slots are calmer and worth taking.

The South Coast Ferries

Not a boat trip in the excursion sense, but the reason many visitors end up on a boat in Chania province at all.

Several villages on the Libyan Sea coast have no road, and the ferry line linking Chora Sfakion, Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sougia and Paleochora is how you reach them — and how you get out of the Samaria Gorge, since the walk ends at Agia Roumeli with no road out. It is public transport rather than a cruise, but the run along the base of the White Mountains is one of the better boat journeys on the island.
