Samaria Gorge
Europe's longest gorge cuts 16 kilometres through the White Mountains National Park, its walls soaring to 600 metres at the famous Iron Gates narrows. The hike runs one-way north to south — you descend from Xyloskalo (1,230m) to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where a ferry carries you back to Hora Sfakion and a bus returns to Chania.
The gorge is open from May through October and closes immediately when there is any risk of flash flooding. On peak summer days, over 2,000 hikers enter — starting early is essential for beating both the crowd and the heat.
🏆 World's #1 Beach 2025
Elafonissi Beach
TripAdvisor's #1 beach in the world for 2025, Elafonissi is a tidal island connected to the mainland by a shallow lagoon — at low tide you can wade across. The sand carries a faint pink blush from crushed shells and coral, and the water is crystal-clear and typically knee-deep for 50 metres out, making it perfect for families.
The 90-minute drive south-west from Chania follows well-maintained roads through the Kissamos valley and along the coast. Arrive before 10am in July and August; later in the day the beach becomes very crowded and parking difficult.
⛵ Boat Tour Highlight
Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa Island
Balos is one of the most photographed places in Greece — a milky turquoise lagoon set between a white sand spit and the rocky Gramvousa peninsula. The lagoon's unusual colour comes from the shallowness of the water over white sand; you can wade in the warm shallows for hours.
There are two ways to reach it: drive a rough 4WD track from Kaliviani village (45 minutes, 4WD recommended), or take a boat from Kissamos port — a one-hour sail each way that passes wild goats on sea cliffs and offers views of the Venetian castle on Gramvousa Island.
Falassarna Beach
One of Greece's finest long sandy beaches, Falassarna stretches for almost 2 kilometres along the west coast of Crete. The sand is pale and fine, the water clear and relatively calm, and the sunsets from here are consistently spectacular. It's significantly less crowded than Elafonissi or Balos, yet the quality is just as high.
The 45-minute drive west from Chania makes this one of the easiest beach day trips. It combines naturally with Balos Lagoon or a quick detour to Gramvousa Island, allowing you to tick off two world-class destinations in one day.
Aptera Ancient City
The closest and most accessible historical day trip from Chania, Aptera is a Minoan-era city with ruins spanning from Bronze Age through Roman and Byzantine periods. Set on a plateau overlooking Souda Bay, the panoramic views alone justify the short detour — and the site is remarkably uncrowded compared to more famous ancient cities in Crete.
Combine your visit with the Souda Bay War Cemetery just below, where over 1,500 Commonwealth soldiers from the Battle of Crete (1941) are buried — one of the most moving and well-maintained war cemeteries in Greece.
Lake Kournas — Crete's Only Freshwater Lake
Completely enclosed by mountains and shimmering an unlikely turquoise, Lake Kournas is unlike anywhere else on the island. You can rent pedal boats on the lake, swim in the fresh water, or simply have lunch at one of the waterfront tavernas watching the ducks and terrapins that inhabit the shallows.
The lake pairs perfectly with Georgioupoli, a charming beachside town just 4km away — with a long sandy beach, good tavernas, and the picturesque river mouth that locals and visitors swim in. A leisurely half-day covers both with ease.
🏰 Venetian Old Town
Rethymno Old Town
Rethymno rivals Chania as the most beautiful city in Crete, and a day spent comparing the two makes for a rich cultural experience. The Venetian Fortezza castle dominates the skyline from a rocky promontory; below it, a labyrinth of Venetian and Ottoman architecture — minarets, wooden balconies, narrow lanes — leads to the Rimondi Fountain and a long sandy beach that runs right along the esplanade.
Unlike Chania's harbour, Rethymno's beach is actually in the city centre, making it unusually easy to combine swimming and sightseeing in one afternoon.
Cretan Countryside Jeep Safari
For those who want to go beyond the tarmac, a guided Jeep Safari through the White Mountains and Cretan interior is one of the most exhilarating experiences on the island. Convoys of 4x4s navigate remote mountain tracks to reach gorges, traditional villages, olive groves, and hidden south-coast beaches that are simply inaccessible to standard hire cars.
Both half-day and full-day options are available. Full-day tours typically include a traditional Cretan lunch in a mountain village, a swim stop at a secluded beach, and a visit to a local olive oil producer or winery. This is a tour-only experience — the terrain requires experienced guides and proper 4WD vehicles.
